How does the 'manuel' work on my 95 subaru imprezza awd L?

on my transmission (automatic) shifter thing i have a on that says manuel, and then 1,2 and 3 on the box where it says drive and reverse and all that, can someone explain these things to me, and what they do, and when they are necessary
