What are some things a band can do to make their music more pretentious?

I think just about every band out there is a little pretentious in their own way. Everyone is trying WAY too hard to be artistic and avant garde...and they're only doing all this for fame and so people will think they're as smart as they think of themselves. I'd say The Shins is a little pretentious.....only dumb, ugly indie kids like them. hah I hate indie kids. They all have small , even the guys.
