What "step" means in the word "step father"?

Basically step means stage, footprint or the movement we make when we walk. But when this word comes before the words such as mother, father, sister and brother, it totally changed its meaning into new or not-mixed-in-blood. But why and how come the word, step, could have these meaning in stepfather or stepmother. Please let me know.Please let me know.
